Hand Animation UPDATE and Reflection on Hand Drawn Animation

mmartinez734

Attatched below is a video of some progress I have made on a hand movement animation so far. I wanted to try and create a sense of urgency and quickness to the movement of the hand, and in order to accomplish that I minimized adding frames in between the initial "snap" from the two states of the hand position and pose. I found myself struggling with the timing of this change however, and went through several different drawings of the same hand at different intervals and trying out different lengths or positioning of time for the new drawings to show up in every other frame and this is what I ended up with.

Another thing I struggled with in this process is creating enough buildup and anticipation in the rapid movement of the hand to signal a more natural and fluid response in the final animation. Below I have attached a slightly earlier stage in the final animation, where I had little to no frames before the first one that signaled any sort of "windup" in the hand movement or any indication that the hand was preparing to change poses. To amend this I ended up adding a couple new drawings and hand poses to the very beginning of the animation in order to provide viewers with those extra few frames of time to process the incoming change to the scene, as well as to give the hand some natural weight and not feel so light and one dimensional as the video below feels without the addition of these frames.

As far as my journey in learning about hand drawn animation, I feel like I have made good progress towards understanding timing and scene composition, as this last animation was a good test towards all of those themes within hand drawn animation. Similarly I have begun to pay a closer eye towards the animated shows that I watch at some and take note of the techniques that such shows or movies use in order to convey certain actions or expressions. Overall I am grateful that the subjects that this style of animation introduces to artists is not all entirely new information to me. With my knowledge in digital software, general artistic knowledge about drawing and other background information of the arts, this medium is a good way to compile all of that knowledge into a single unit. With the addition of being a frequent consumer of this type of media, such as watching cartoon shows and the like, a lot of the methods of animation also came naturally to me as I was also able to recognize information that I have picked up over the years in life and tips I learned online through educational youtube channels.

  • Below I will attach my reference

For my final animation I would like to emphasize the overshoot of the hand as well as clean up the sketch lines a tad and add more movement lines to add character to the hand.
