Lapsus Overview

  1. What are some of the main shapes used in the film?

  • Circles, half ovals, and silhouettes of objects such as a woman and a mouse, and her body parts like her hands and glasses.

  1. How do these shapes contribute to the visual style and humor of the film?

  • Oftentimes, the animation cleverly uses the simple style of the film in order to represent shapes as multiple objects. For example, once we separate the nun’s eyes from her body we have a white circle with a black dot in the center, and once she crosses over to the lighter side, a silhouette of a woman is shown with the nun’s eyes placed on her chest in order to represent her breasts. This subversion of expectation catches viewers by surprise and allows the viewer to react even stronger to the humor as an innocent nun is not often associated with “vulgarities” and she too reacts surprised.

  1. What do you know about the character in Lapsus? How is that communicated?

  • From what viewers can tell throughout the film, the nun character is portrayed as a very innocent and easily frightened character. She is constantly praying with a worried face and looks very scared as she interacts with the “darkness”, desperately trying to piece herself back together. After stepping into the void several times and losing more and more body parts, we begin to see her slowly come around and finding herself intrigued by the unordinary, and being more and more drawn to the unknown as she would likely not have been able to imagine before. Her body language is also important to communicating her emotions, showing hesitation and excitement throughout the movie in her simple movements such as the rolling of her eyes, the position of her hands after they’ve detached and much more.
