Slow-in & Slow-out

Writer's picture: MelissaMelissa

Slow-in & Slow-out is a way to describe an animation principle in which the movement in a certain scene builds up speed slowly and then finishes slowly. It makes scenes feel more natural, less machine like or robotic with a consistent pace.

In the link above, we can see the green ball building up gradual speed to quickly zip across the screen before slowing down just as quickly to a stop to the right of the screen. This way the viewer has enough time to see the objects path and understand that it is moving at a rapid pace by the quick movements it appears to be taking in a short amount of time versus taking the same path in a more even amount of time. It grants an extra level of depth to an animation.

In the link above at the 30 second mark we can see a short animation of a golfer putting a golf ball through the air. As the narrator explains we can see the gradual acceleration and decent of the frames as the video plays, viewers can feel the weight of the swing and the power it holds as the force carries on through the ball. This way there are two connecting parts to the animation principle and we can see how it can be used in combination with other objects at play and the effectiveness of the usage on a scene.
